Senior PHP Developer (Payments)

Overview

A rapidly scaling digital commerce platform is seeking a Senior PHP Developer to join its dedicated Payments Engineering Team. This role focuses entirely on building and optimising the systems that power high-volume, secure, multi-currency transactions. You will help architect and maintain the backbone that keeps global payment flows smooth, compliant, and bulletproof.

Key Responsibilities

• Build and maintain secure, efficient PHP applications using Laravel, with a heavy emphasis on payment processing, gateway integrations (Stripe, PayPal, Adyen), and subscription workflows.
• Design and implement industry-standard security practices, covering PCI DSS considerations, tokenization, fraud prevention, 3D Secure, and SCA/PSD2.
• Troubleshoot and debug real-time payment issues, ensuring reliability, accuracy, and transactional integrity at scale.
• Collaborate with product managers to enhance user experience across all payment-related touchpoints and contribute to team knowledge-sharing through code reviews and mentoring.

Requirements

• 5+ years of PHP experience, including extensive work with Laravel.
• Proven, non-negotiable hands-on experience with payment gateways like Stripe, PayPal, or Adyen.
• Strong understanding of webhooks, asynchronous payment flows, retry logic, and idempotent operations.
• Solid proficiency in automated testing for payment and transaction-related scenarios.
• Deep knowledge of security, compliance (PCI DSS, PSD2/SCA), and multi-currency transaction handling.

Nice to Have

• Experience with large-scale digital marketplaces or high-volume consumer transactions.
• Background in developer-focused platforms or API-centric products.
