Law Clerk - Commercial Litigation
About the Opportunity
Our client, a respected mid-sized Toronto law firm, is seeking a Litigation Law Clerk to join its Commercial Litigation team.
This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated legal professional with 3+ years of litigation experience to take on a hands-on, client-facing role supporting complex commercial disputes. You’ll work closely with experienced litigators on a broad range of matters, including contractual disputes, shareholder issues, insolvency, and professional negligence claims — while gaining deeper exposure to e-discovery and advanced litigation technology.
Key Responsibilities
File Management
- Manage all aspects of commercial litigation files from initiation through discovery, mediation, trial, and appeal.
- Maintain accurate, organized, and secure electronic and physical files.
Drafting & Documentation
- Draft, prepare, and manage key litigation materials, including:
- Statements of Claim, Defense, and Counterclaims
- Motion Records, Notices of Motion, and Affidavits
- Discovery Plans, Affidavits of Documents, and undertakings responses
- Mediation Briefs, Settlement Offers, and Trial Records
- Costs Outlines, Appeal materials, and related documents
 
- Ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance with the Ontario Rules of Civil Procedure and applicable court practices.
E-Discovery & Legal Technology
- Support and manage the e-discovery process, including collection, processing, review, and production of electronic records.
- Utilize e-discovery platforms (e.g., Relativity, Everlaw, CaseLines, Summation) for document review and management.
- Assist with data organization, coding, redaction, and privilege review.
- Collaborate with internal IT and external vendors to ensure efficient, defensible data handling.
Court Filings & Procedures
- Prepare, issue, and e-file court documents with the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and the Court of Appeal.
- Track and monitor critical filing deadlines and limitation periods.
Discovery & Trial Preparation
- Coordinate discoveries, prepare summaries, manage productions, and liaise with experts and witnesses.
- Assist in preparing digital and physical trial binders and courtroom materials for in-person and virtual hearings.
Client & Lawyer Support
- Communicate directly with clients, opposing counsel, and third parties to support case progression.
- Manage deadlines, provide case updates, and ensure exceptional client service
Qualifications
- Law Clerk Diploma or equivalent education.
- 3+ years of litigation experience, ideally within commercial litigation.
- Strong understanding of the Ontario Rules of Civil Procedure and court filing requirements.
- Proficiency in MS Office, legal practice management software (e.g., PC Law, ACL, or Clio), and court e-filing systems.
- Experience using e-discovery tools and document management software.
- Excellent drafting, organizational, and communication skills.
- Proven ability to manage multiple complex files with accuracy and attention to detail.
