Title: Lead UI Product Designer (Design Systems)

Location: UK or Europe

Rate: £550-£700 DOE

RMG Digital is looking for a Lead Visual/UI Designer to lead a visual evolution of an established design system, not a ground-up redesign. The system is used across a suite of technical, US-facing products and has stood still visually for several years while the underlying architecture and engineering have moved on.

You'll set a fresh visual direction that modernises the look and feel and brings it up to date with current UI conventions, while staying complementary to the existing product experience rather than replacing it. A central part of the brief is incorporating AI into the system: defining visual patterns and interaction models for AI-driven experiences, which is a clear gap today. You'll also bring attention to micro-interactions and motion, an area that has never been invested in at the system level.

You will move quickly to concepts, get them agreed with senior stakeholders including the design system's VP owner and several UX leads, then hand off to the existing team of architects and engineers to build out and codify into the system. Your focus is the craft and direction; the team already in place will make it real.

This is a contract, full-time engagement for a minimum of six months, with scope to extend. We're prioritising candidates based in Europe or the UK, with the US considered as a last option.

What you'll do:

  • Lead the visual evolution of an existing design system, elevating rather than replacing its current direction
  • Define visual patterns and interaction models for AI-driven experiences within the system
  • Bring modern, easy-to-use UI conventions and improved usability to the system's visual layer
  • Design micro-interactions and motion patterns at a system level
  • Present and align concepts with senior stakeholders, including a VP-level system owner and multiple UX leads
  • Hand off finished direction to the existing architecture and engineering team for implementation

What we're looking for:

  • Proven experience leading a visual evolution or redesign of a large-scale design system, with genuinely strong visual and UI design craft
  • Credibility operating alongside senior stakeholders and the ability to push a design direction forward
  • Comfortable working on technical, complex products
  • Experience designing for AI-driven experiences and patterns is a strong plus
  • Motion and micro-interaction design experience is a plus
