Staff Software Engineer (Applied AI)

Remote, USA | $180,000–$240,000 + bonus + equity

If you want to ship real AI into production — not just experiment with it — this is where your work could improve care for thousands of patients.

You’ve probably seen plenty of “AI roles” that are really just sandbox projects, vague innovation briefs, or pure research jobs with no path to real-world impact.

This isn’t one of them.

This is a high-impact opportunity to architect and build the LLM intelligence layer for a fast-growing healthcare technology platform. You’ll design systems that work in production, scale securely, and help care teams deliver more proactive, effective support in a highly regulated environment.

So if you’re a strong full-stack engineer with a backend bias, and you’ve already gone beyond “playing around” with AI into actually shipping it, this could be the kind of challenge worth moving for.

What’s in it for you

You’ll take on a role with genuine ownership and influence.

You won’t be joining to fine-tune models in isolation or work on AI ideas that never make it into the product. You’ll help define how applied AI is built properly inside a modern platform — from technical architecture through to user-facing delivery.

You’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Architect the core LLM layer across a broad product suite, including RAG pipelines, agentic workflows, vector databases, APIs, and supporting services
  • Build production-grade AI systems that are scalable, observable, secure, and reliable
  • Work across the stack, including backend systems, data pipelines, and user-facing product experiences
  • Influence technical strategy across large, multi-quarter initiatives
  • Partner closely with Product, Design, Operations, and Engineering leaders
  • Mentor engineers and help raise the technical bar across the organisation
  • Apply AI in a domain where accuracy, trust, compliance, and thoughtful system design genuinely matter

In other words, your work won’t sit in a prototype graveyard. It’ll shape how intelligence is delivered across the platform.

What you’ll be doing — and why you’ll enjoy it

You’ll be trusted with meaningful technical problems that need both depth and judgement.

That includes:

  • Designing and building the foundational LLM architecture behind high-impact product features
  • Creating distributed systems, microservices, APIs, and data pipelines that process complex data at scale
  • Integrating LLM outputs into intuitive user experiences
  • Running proofs of concept on new AI technologies and deciding what is actually worth productising
  • Improving observability, monitoring, reliability, and operational excellence
  • Championing secure engineering in a regulated environment, including HIPAA and SOC2 considerations
  • Driving system design for large, cross-functional projects with long-term business impact
  • Translating complex business needs into practical technical strategies
  • Coaching engineers across multiple levels and helping them grow

This role will suit you if you like solving difficult problems end to end, care about how systems behave in production, and enjoy combining hands-on building with technical leadership.

Why join

This organisation is helping healthcare providers succeed in a changing care landscape by combining technology, financial tools, and expert support.

The mission is meaningful, the engineering challenges are real, and the environment is highly collaborative.

It’s a remote-first business, but not a disconnected one. People work closely together, help each other solve hard problems, and are trusted to do their best work without being left to figure everything out alone. There’s a strong sense of shared purpose, particularly across engineering and product, and the culture is built around thoughtful collaboration rather than ego.

For the right person, that means the chance to do ambitious technical work in a business where the outcome matters.

What you’ll need (please read this)

You’ll likely bring most of the following:

  • 8+ years in large-scale software engineering
  • Strong experience with service-oriented architectures and data-intensive systems
  • Proven success designing scalable, observable distributed systems
  • Hands-on experience shipping applied AI or LLM features into production
  • Practical experience with RAG architectures, including chunking strategies, semantic search, vector databases, and agentic workflows
  • Strong backend engineering capability, with the flexibility to work across the stack when needed
  • Cloud experience, ideally AWS, including infrastructure, deployment, and cost-conscious system design
  • Strong database and data modelling experience, including schema design, query optimisation, and consistency patterns
  • A track record of leading complex cross-functional projects and influencing technical direction

You’ll stand out further if you’ve also worked in healthcare, fintech, or another regulated environment, and if you’ve built user-facing applications with tools such as React, TypeScript, Angular, or Vue.

This role may not be right for you if...

You’ll probably be happier elsewhere if:

  • You want a purely individual contributor role with little mentoring or influence
  • You prefer short-term delivery work over bigger, multi-quarter technical ownership
  • You only want to work in one layer of the stack
  • You’re more interested in academic AI research or model training than productising AI for real users

What you’ll get

  • Base salary: $180,000–$240,000
  • Performance bonus
  • Equity options
  • Competitive benefits package

Final compensation will depend on experience, skills, location, and market conditions.
